Press conference: 11am on 9 November 2022, at the port of Catania, Sicily, on the current situation on board the Humanity 1 and the hunger strike announced by the majority of the survivors remaining on the ship.
08.11.2022. For the past three days, 35 asylum seekers on board the search and rescue ship Humanity 1 in Catania, Sicily, have not been allowed ashore. In the night of the 5th of November, Italian authorities carried out an illegal selection process of the original 179 people on the Humanity 1 who were rescued from distress at sea. The people forced to stay on board have now announced that the majority of them have been on a hunger strike for approximately the last 2 days.
We would like to provide information on the current situation on board the rescue ship Humanity 1 and on the further legal and operational procedures of the search and rescue organisation SOS Humanity at a press conference, to which we hereby invite press representatives.
