Film Screening ‘Io Capitano’
Our volunteer group is organising the film screening ‘Io Capitano’ on 9 November at 7 pm at the Refugio in Berlin. Afterwards, our former intern from the advocacy and mobilisation team Elina will briefly introduce the work of SOS Humanity and answer questions from the audience.

Der Film
„Ich Capitano“ handelt von den zwei senegalesischen Jugendlichen Seydou und Moussa, die ihre Heimat Dakar verlassen, um sich in Europa ein neues Leben als Musiker aufzubauen. Um diesen Traum zu erfüllen, nehmen sie ein hohes Risiko auf sich: Auf ihrer Reise durchqueren sie die Wüste, landen in Libyens Internierungslagern, bis sie vor der Herausforderung stehen, die lebensgefährliche Route über das Mittelmeer zu nehmen.
Das Drama wurde 2023 für Bester internationaler Film bei den Oscars nominiert und der Regisseur Matteo Garrone wurde bei den 80. Internationalen Filmfestspielen von Venedig mit dem Silbernen Löwen ausgezeichnet. Hauptdarsteller Seydou Sarr erhielt zudem den „Marcello-Mastroianni-Preis“ als bester Nachwuchs-Darsteller.
Im Anschluss an die Vorführung wird unsere ehemalige Praktikantin aus dem Advocacy und Mobilisierungsteam Elina ein paar Informationen zu der Arbeit von SOS Humanity geben und Fragen aus dem Publikum zur zivilen Seenotrettung beantworten.
The Film
‘Io Capitano’ is about two Senegalese teenagers, Seydou and Moussa, who leave their home in Dakar to build a new life as musicians in Europe. In order to fulfil this dream, they take great risks: on their journey, they cross the desert, end up in Libya’s detention camps until they are faced with the challenge of taking the life-threatening route across the Mediterranean.
The drama was nominated for Best International Film at the 2023 Oscars and director Matteo Garrone was awarded the Silver Lion at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. Leading actor Seydou Sarr also received the ‘Marcello Mastroianni Award’ for best up-and-coming actor.
After the screening, our former intern from the advocacy and mobilisation team Elina will give some information about the work of SOS Humanity and answer questions from the audience about civilian search and rescue.
