Midwife
Since our founding in Berlin in 2015, SOS Humanity has been active as a civilian search and rescue organisation to ensure that no one has to drown at sea and that everyone is treated with dignity. With our rescue ships Humanity 1 and Humanity 2 we operate in the central Mediterranean to rescue people in distress at sea, protect them and bring them to a place of safety.
For our operational crew we are urgently looking for a Midwife:
In the position of Midwife on board Humanity 1, you will be primarily, but not exclusively be responsible
for the medical care of pregnant woman and babies and will address gynecological concerns of those who
are and are not pregnant. You furthermore are the focal point on SGBV. You will provide essential medical
services and support the overall mission to ensure the health and well-being of survivors.
As the midwife you are part of the 4-person medical team, consisting of medical doctor, paramedic OR
nurse, midwife and mental health specialist. The medical team is part of the care team on board and
supervised by the Care-Coordinator (CareCo) during the rotation.
Responsibilities:
• Medical Care:
- Main responsibility for the medical care of pregnant women and to support appropriate
medical care and feeding of infants and small children. - Main responsibility for the medical care of female survivors of SGBV.
- Be vigilant in supporting female survivors to re-establish personal agency, dignity, and
informed consent/choice regarding medical and psychological care, including the choice
whether to access care and/or submit to testing/screening. - Provide physical examinations of consenting female survivors as directed by the physician
for other medical conditions. - Assist the physician in providing medical care to the rescued (and crew, if needed) during
the mission. - Assist and initiate performance of medevacs in obstetric and gynecological emergencies.
- Document medical treatments accurately.
• Protection & Referrals:
- Work closely with all Care Team, specifically the Protection Representative, to detect, and
refer (medical) vulnerabilities to organizations on land. - Assure that female survivors are informed of healthcare rights and expectations in Italy.
• Support Activities:
- Assist with inventory and equipment checks.
- Offer training presentations to crew as time and interest allows on topics of expertise
pertaining to female migration issues.
Qualification & Requirements:
- Completed training/study as a midwife and a minimum of 2 years of full-time work experience as
a midwife (or equivalent part-time experience). - Female phenotype and identification as female gender.
- Sensitivity in interacting with traumatized patients and commitment to avoiding retraumatization.
- Respect for the cultural background of the patients and the resulting restrictions
(e.g., physical examinations of women are performed exclusively by the midwife if the medic is
male, except in emergencies). General cultural Sensitivity: Deep understanding of cultural
nuances and the ability to provide care respecting cultural backgrounds. - Willingness to acquire specific knowledge based on literature provided prior to the mission.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and
effectively. - Patient Care: Ability to interact with and provide sensitive care to traumatized patients.
- Flexibility: Adaptability and willingness to perform a variety of tasks, including non-medical duties.
- Stress Management: Ability to manage stress and remain calm in challenging situations.
- Teamwork: Strong team spirit and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
