On 1 December 2024, TV actors from the crime series Tatort, Polizeiruf 110 and Sörensen will focus on the Mediterranean as a crime scene at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus theatre. In a scenic reading, they will present eyewitness accounts and stories from on board our rescue ship, the Humanity 1. They will be accompanied by the Palestinian-Syrian pianist Aeham Ahmad, who received the ‘International Beethoven Prize for Human Rights’ in 2015. "The statement: ‘We will not let anyone die’ is so clear and pervasive that it stands above everything. It acts as a compass for all decisions and calls for immediate action. That's why I support SOS Humanity out of deep conviction."

Giving a voice to people who have none

The central Mediterranean is one of the deadliest flight routes in the world. Almost 24,000 people have drowned there since 2014. The European Union, which sees itself as the guardian of humanitarian values, is shirking its duty to rescue people in distress at sea. Europe is knowingly abandoning the unwelcome people seeking protection. The numbers of drowned people, breaches of the law and human rights violations continue to rise. The Mediterranean is not only a mass grave, but also a crime scene.

The actors on stage at Tatort Mittelmeer read out eyewitness accounts from crew members and the personal experiences of those rescued. We also try to give a voice to the unheard on our website. Here you can get an impression of what those rescued on board have to say.

Gerettete Familien von hinten auf der Humanity 1
"They said to each other: ‘Let them die, it's easier for us and for them’."
"They call your mum, your family, and scare them: ‘We're going to kill him’."
Überlebende blicken in die Kamera
"They say: ‘We are European [...]. Not African.' We are black, so that's how they treat us."
"Those who don't try have nothing to gain from life. We have no choice but to leave."
Four survivors with blankets on board Humanity 1
"The Libyans don't like us. They treat us like animals."

Have we piqued your interest and would you like to find out more about the circumstances of the flight and the work on board? Then take a look at our website under Testimonies. There you will find interviews with crew members and supporters as well as the flight stories of those rescued on board.

Tickets for Tatort Mittelmeer are available via the website of the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus.

The event is a cooperation between SOS Humanity and the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus theatre and financed by the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie. Together we want to inform people about the humanitarian emergency in the Mediterranean. Every ticket is a donation to civil search and rescue. The proceeds will go to SOS Humanity. See you in Düsseldorf!
