Since our founding in Berlin in 2015, SOS Humanity has been active as a civilian search and rescue organisation to ensure that no one has to drown at sea and that everyone is treated with dignity. With our rescue ships Humanity 1 and Humanity 2 we operate in the central Mediterranean to rescue people in distress at sea, protect them and bring them to a place of safety.

For our operational crew we are looking for a Care Coordinator

 

 

Tasks and Responsibilities:

The Care Team Coordinator (CareCo) is the team leader of the Care Team, which consists of the medical team (doctor, paramedic/nurse, midwife, and mental health representative), the safeguarding officer, and the cultural mediator. They are also part of the rotation leadership team (HoM team) on board and coordinate, along with the Search and Rescue Coordinator (SARCo), the Communications Coordinator (CommsCo), and the captain, the entire operational crew during the entire rotation. 

  • Full responsibility for the well-being of the survivors on board the Humanity 1
  • Share responsibility for the well-being of the crew as part of the rotation leadership team
  • Coordinate a multicultural and multidisciplinary care team on board
  • Assign tasks and roles based on skills and priorities
  • Plan and coordinate services and activities for survivors (medical examinations, distributions, information sessions, embarkation and disembarkation, etc.)
  • Organize the work shift schedule (deck watches, food distributions, etc.)
  • Provide theoretical and practical training for the crew on various aspects of care
  • Make general strategic/operational decisions as part of their duties as a member of the HoM team
  • Overseeing inventory and stock management, as well as crowd management when people are on board.

Requirements:

  • Ability to adapt to life on board, including simple living conditions at sea (housework and shift work, cold weather). 
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and good report writing skills. 
  • Flexibility and ability to work under stress and remain calm in stressful situations. 
  • Leadership and team management skills. 
  • Integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity. 
  • Previous experience in search and rescue operations on board a ship and knowledge of the central Mediterranean context. 
  • Previous experience in the areas of safeguarding, gender, and gender equality in a humanitarian context. 
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to delegate and work within a team. 
  • Solution-oriented and conflict mediation skills. 
  • Good time management. 
  • Decision-making skills. 
  • Empathetic and empowering personality. 
  • C1 in English as well as at least one other language from the following: French and/or Arabic. 

Desirable: 

  • Fluency in both written and spoken Italian. 
  • STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate (STCW A-VI/1) & Security Awareness and Designated Security Duties (STCW A-VI/6).
