Since our founding in Berlin in 2015, SOS Humanity has been active as a civil search and rescue organisation, working to ensure that no one on the move has to drown and that everyone is treated with dignity. With our rescue vessels Humanity 1 and Humanity 2, we operate in the central Mediterranean to rescue and protect people in distress at sea and bring them to a place of safety.

We are looking for a Chief Cook

Food is essential for general wellbeing onboard. As Chief Cook you are the person responsible for anything connected to Food and Food Hygiene onboard. From ship’s structure side, you are part of the deck department with the Chief Officer as your Head of Department but hold the managerial position of the Galley. You are also integrated into the Care Team in regard to special operations to plan and cook food as well as coordinate food distributions for survivors.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Managerial position Galley
  • Line Manager for 2nd Cook and Crew Change Cooks (briefings, familiarisation, instruct and coordinate) – possible technical adviser for crewing team during recruitment phase
  • Ordering of provisions after conducting inventories in close cooperation with logisticians
  • Verify quality and quantity of food deliveries and manage storage of provisions
  • Responsibility for cleanliness and hygiene in galley, provisions stores and related areas (e.g. pantry, tea room)
  • Supervise temperatures of refrigerators & freezers in cooperation with Engine Team and 2nd Officer
  • Plan and cook two warm, balanced vegan meals in accordance with allergy information provided by crewing team
    • 29 crew members during rotation
    • More during handover times/port calls (~35)
    • Survivors after rescue
  • Plan preparation and distribution of food for survivors – coordination with Care Coordinator
  • Instruct Galley Support/other crew members in cleaning/store duties
  • Create and keep updated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in close cooperation with others responsible (C/O, Cook, Logs)
  • Conduct domestic tour with onsigning crew to instruct and familiarise in accordance with cleaning procedures
  • Cooking is essential work which can mean working when others have time off
  • Support on deck during SAR operations

Requirements:

  • Experience in planning and preparing larger amounts of (vegan) food
  • Knowledge around balanced nutrition & allergens
  • Interest in keeping food waste low
  • Attestation of Food Hygiene Training – at best English/bilingual Certificate
  • Good time management
  • Valid Certificate of Proficiency in Basic Safety (STCW A-VI/1) – issued within last five years
  • Valid Certificate of Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW A-VI/6)
  • Very good teamwork skills, especially in extreme situations
  • Strong communication skills
  • Physical fitness and mental resilience, incl. valid Medical Certificate for Seafarers for desired position
  • Good English language skills (C1)
  • Age: 23-70 years
  • Vaccinations: Covid19 booster vaccination, measles, rubella
