Since our founding in Berlin in 2015, SOS Humanity has been active as a civilian search and rescue organisation to ensure that no one has to drown at sea and that everyone is treated with dignity. With our rescue ships Humanity 1 and Humanity 2 we operate in the central Mediterranean to rescue people in distress at sea, protect them and bring them to a place of safety.

For our operational crew we are urgently looking for a Medical Doctor

The Medical Doctor is one of 15 roles within a 10-person crew and is therefore typically combined with another role or set of responsibilities. The Doctor is responsible for:

  • Providing overall medical care on board for survivors and crew
  • Leading the medical response during operations
  • Conducting triage and delivering initial and ongoing medical treatment
  • Identifying and managing life-threatening conditions
  • Descisionmaking regarding medical evacuations in coordination with the Head of Mission team
  • Ensuring continuity of care through referrals to medical organisations on land
  • Collaborating closely with the care team to identify medical and non-medical vulnerabilities
  • Documenting medical diagnoses and treatments as required
  • Managing the onboard clinic and medical inventory
  • Ensuring medical operational readiness throughout the rotation
  • Supporting crew training in medical procedures

Qualifications:

  • Valid licence to practice medicine
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience
  • Specialisation or strong experience in emergency medicine, including at least 50 independent emergency interventions or equivalent in-hospital experience
  • Preferably SAR experience
  • Experience in low-resource settings
  • High level of flexibility and adaptability

Additional assets:

  • Obstetrics and gynaecology (OB/GYN) experience
  • Paediatric experience
