Protection Representative (Humanity 2)
Since our founding in Berlin in 2015, SOS Humanity has been active as a civilian search and rescue organisation to ensure that no one has to drown at sea and that everyone is treated with dignity. With our rescue ships Humanity 1 and Humanity 2 we operate in the central Mediterranean to rescue people in distress at sea, protect them and bring them to a place of safety.
For our operational crew we are urgently looking for a Protection Representative
The Protection Representative is one of 15 roles within a 10-person crew and is therefore typically combined with another role or set of responsibilities. The Protection Represenative is responsible for:
- Organising information sessions on protection topics on board in coordination with the CareCo, in line with the protection and safeguarding strategy (e.g. asylum procedures, rights and responsibilities)
- Coordinating the embarkation of survivors onto the Humanity2
- Training the crew on protection principles and referral pathways
- Ensuring proper registration and processing of key demographic data, including special protection needs, after each embarkation
- Identifying and referring vulnerable individuals in line with the protection strategy
- Coordinating referrals to partner organisations on land
- Ensuring timely information sharing with survivors and external actors
- Building and maintaining networks with stakeholders (e.g. UNHCR, NGOs, local authorities, EUAA)
Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of the Italian asylum system
- Knowledge of humanitarian principles, refugee law, and human rights law
- French and Italian (native level preferred); additional Arabic desirable
- Experience working in the field of migration
- Degree in International Law, Political Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Ideally, experience in psychological first aid or a related background
- Strong communication skills and cultural sensitivity when working with traumatised individuals
