SOS Humanity is a non-governmental search and rescue organisation that was founded by a German captain in 2015. The NGO rescues people on the world’s deadliest refugee route, the Mediterranean Sea, with the rescue ship Humanity 1. SOS Humanity’s goals are to rescue people in distress at sea, care for them on board, bring their stories to the public and bear witness to the humanitarian catastrophe in the Mediterranean. The non-profit organisation also works to change the migration policy of the EU and its member states so that human rights and humanity are upheld in the Mediterranean and no one has to drown while fleeing war, persecution and slavery.
