Communications Lead (Humanity 2)
Since our founding in Berlin in 2015, SOS Humanity has been active as a civilian search and rescue organisation to ensure that no one has to drown at sea and that everyone is treated with dignity. With our rescue ships Humanity 1 and Humanity 2 we operate in the central Mediterranean to rescue people in distress at sea, protect them and bring them to a place of safety.
For our operational crew we are looking for a Communications Lead (Comms Lead)
The Comms Lead is responsible for:
- the information flow and documentation on board, in close coordination with the SARCo and Skipper.
- Managing ship-to-shore communication (regular updates to the back office)
- Supervising email, radio, and telephone communication with authorities in coordination with the SARCo and Skipper
- Documenting and logging all communications with authorities and operational events
- Developing and maintaining the operational chronology
- Supporting the SARCo in strategic decision-making during operations
- Acting as the designated media coordination person
- Ensuring the media team has all necessary information and content
- Reviewing photos for compliance with SOS guidelines and coordinating consent where required
- Working closely with the media representative responsible for capturing and processing images
- Acting as a spokesperson if required
Qualifications:
- SAR experienced
- Experience in professional written communication (e.g. reports and correspondence)
- Experience with documentation and logging
- Understanding of the political situation and developments in the Central Med, Tunisia and Libya
- Understanding of media processes and requirements
- Sensitivity in handling images and consent guidelines
- Ideally, experience in NGO communications or public relation
