Since our founding in Berlin in 2015, SOS Humanity has been active as a civilian search and rescue organisation to ensure that no one has to drown at sea and that everyone is treated with dignity. With our rescue ships Humanity 1 and Humanity 2 we operate in the central Mediterranean to rescue people in distress at sea, protect them and bring them to a place of safety.

For our operational crew we are looking for a Communications Lead (Comms Lead)

The Comms Lead is responsible for:

• the information flow and documentation on board, in close coordination with the SARCo and Skipper.
• Managing ship-to-shore communication (regular updates to the back office)
• Supervising email, radio, and telephone communication with authorities in coordination with the SARCo and Skipper
• Documenting and logging all communications with authorities and operational events
• Developing and maintaining the operational chronology
• Supporting the SARCo in strategic decision-making during operations
• Acting as the designated media coordination person
• Ensuring the media team has all necessary information and content
• Reviewing photos for compliance with SOS guidelines and coordinating consent where required
• Working closely with the media representative responsible for capturing and processing images
• Acting as a spokesperson if required

Qualifications:

• SAR experienced
• Experience in professional written communication (e.g. reports and correspondence)
• Experience with documentation and logging
• Understanding of the political situation and developments in the Central Med, Tunisia and Libya
• Understanding of media processes and requirements
• Sensitivity in handling images and consent guidelines
• Ideally, experience in NGO communications or public relation
