Search and Rescue Coordinator – SARCo (Humanity 2)

Marcel Beloqui Evardone / SOS Humanity

Since our founding in Berlin in 2015, SOS Humanity has been active as a civilian search and rescue organisation to ensure that no one has to drown at sea and that everyone is treated with dignity. With our rescue ships Humanity 1 and Humanity 2 we operate in the central Mediterranean to rescue people in distress at sea, protect them and bring them to a place of safety.

For our operational crew we are looking for a SAR-Coordinator

The SAR Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Planning all SAR phases of the rotation
  • Organising SAR trainings and wet drills
  • Deciding, together with the Skipper, where to patrol within the area of operations based on open cases, recent departure points, actors present, weather conditions, and legal considerations
  • Coordinating with other SAR actors, assets, and MRCCs to ensure efficient operations
  • Leading operational decision-making during active cases, including determining the appropriate mode of operation (e.g. stabilizing or rescueing)
  • Coordinating RHIB operations from aboard Humanity 2
  • Maintaining communication with the operational back office
  • In coordination with the Skipper and Comms Lead, maintaining an overview of written and verbal communication with authorities
  • Leading the crew as part of the HOM Team

Qualifications:

  • Extensive SAR experience, including on the Tunisian corridor
  • Several rotations as SARCo on small- to medium-sized NGO vessels operating near Lampedusa, including stabilisation and accompanying operations
  • Ideally, experience with RHIB operations
  • Italian and Arabic desirable, but not required
