Supervisor (volunteer position) — Psychological Support Unit 2026

Your Position

We are seeking supervisors to join our pool of volunteer supervisors and contribute to the psychological support of the crew throughout 2026. Working alongside other psychologists and/or psychotherapists, you will provide structured psychological support before, during, and after rotations, with involvement in up to two rotations per year.

The role includes two components:

Online

  • Online psychological briefing with the entire crew before departure.
  • Individual online meetings with each crew member before boarding.
  • Online psychological support during the rotation, available for individual or group sessions when needed.
  • Follow-up support up to one month after the rotation (if needed).

In Person

  • Participation in the final psychological debriefing on board during the last days of the rotation (group and individual sessions).Supervisors work in pairs and collaborate closely with the pool referent and the Mental Health Advisor to ensure coherent, high-quality, and standardized psychological support.

Your Tasks

  • Provide psychological support to the crew before, during, and after the rotation.
  • Conduct in-person debriefings on board Humanity 1 (group and individual).
  • Participate in at least one rotation in 2026, including in-person debriefing days.
  • Plan the psychological intervention, adapt it to the 2026 structure, and collaborate with the pool referent.
  • Provide online psychological support throughout the rotation (typically 5 weeks) and after the rotation for eventual follow-ups.
  • Provide one follow-up meeting per person within one month after the mission (if needed).
  • Make referrals to external professionals based on psychological evaluation.
  • Design, implement, and adapt interventions according to evolving needs within the standardized framework.
  • Ensure alignment with team needs and maintain professional quality, flexibility, and ethical boundaries.
  • Participate in monthly team meetings with a 1-year commitment.

Your Profile

  • Psychologist and/or psychotherapist, registered in the national order of your country, actively working in the profession.
  • Professional proficiency in English.
  • Based in Europe, with preference for candidates located in Sicily, Italy.
  • Experience in group psychological work, ideally in emergency or high-stress contexts.
  • Skilled in group facilitation, psychological activities, and Psychological First Aid (PFA).
  • Experience in psychological supervision and intervision.
  • Strong teamwork capability, respectful collaboration, solution-oriented mindset, and long-term commitment throughout 2026.
  • Ability to manage uncertainty, unpredictability, trauma exposure, and diverse personalities.
  • Knowledge of the Central Mediterranean migratory route and its psychological implications.
  • Commitment to SAR activities and alignment with SOS Humanity’s values.
